End of an era: Apple declares iPhone 6s and original iPhone SE obsolete in major 2026 update

In a significant move that signals the end of the road for some of its most iconic devices, Apple has updated its official roster of vintage and obsolete products, effectively rendering several classic iPhone models unsupported as of 2026.

The tech giant issued a fresh warning to users following the update, urging consumers to verify whether their current smartphones remain eligible for security updates and hardware repairs. With this change, devices added to the “obsolete” list will no longer receive critical software patches or official servicing from Apple, leaving them vulnerable to evolving cyber threats.

The Obsolete List: Time Runs Out for Favorites

Devices that have now been designated as obsolete include the widely popular iPhone 6s series and the first-generation iPhone SE, alongside older models that defined the smartphone era.

The full list of iPhones now considered obsolete includes:

· iPhone 3G and 3GS variants
· iPhone 4 and 4S
· iPhone 5C and 5S
· iPhone 6 and 6 Plus
· iPhone 6s and 6s Plus (specifically the 32GB model)
· iPhone SE (1st generation)

When a product becomes obsolete, Apple discontinues all hardware repair services, and the devices cease to receive software security updates.

The ‘Vintage’ Category: Limited Support Remains

In addition to the obsolete classification, Apple has expanded its “vintage” list. These devices are still eligible for repairs, subject to parts availability, and may receive limited security updates for a finite period.

Notably, Apple has added several once-flagship devices to this category, including:

· iPhone X
· iPhone XS and XS Max
· iPhone 11 Pro Max

Other existing vintage models include the 16GB, 64GB, and 128GB variants of the iPhone 6s, as well as the iPhone 7 series and the iPhone 8 lineup.

The Security Risk of Holding On

Cybersecurity experts warn that holding onto unsupported devices poses a significant risk to personal data. Without security patches, attackers can exploit known vulnerabilities to access sensitive information.

“Once a vulnerability is discovered and made public, unsupported devices become low-hanging fruit for bad actors,” explained Jake Moore, global cybersecurity advisor at ESET. “Attackers can rapidly exploit these flaws to gain access to banking details, personal photos, and private communications. The absence of a security update essentially leaves the front door unlocked.”

Performance on these older devices is also expected to degrade over time, with potential instability and incompatibility with third-party apps.

Which iPhones Are Safe?

Apple’s latest operating system, iOS 26, is only compatible with newer hardware. Users running older operating systems are urged to check their compatibility.

iOS 26 supports the following models:

· iPhone 11, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Max
· iPhone 12 series and newer
· iPhone 13, 14, 15, and 16 lineups
· iPhone SE (2nd generation and later)

While iOS 18 updates are still being pushed to some legacy devices, users on the newly listed obsolete hardware will not receive any future software iterations.

What Users Should Do

Consumers are advised to check their device settings to see if their iPhone is listed as vintage or obsolete. For those using obsolete models, replacement is strongly recommended. For users with vintage devices, experts advise upgrading soon, as full support is expected to lapse in the near future.

“It is crucial to check the devices used by family members, particularly children and elderly relatives, who may be less vigilant about monitoring security updates,” the advisory noted.

While purchasing a brand-new smartphone can be a financial burden, experts suggest considering the refurbished market. Certified refurbished iPhones offer a more affordable entry point and remain eligible for the latest software updates, ensuring security without the flagship price tag.
