‘El Mencho’ laid to rest in golden casket as Mexico braces for cartel violence

Notorious Mexican drug lord Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, the leader of the feared Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), was buried in a golden casket on Monday following a lavish and highly secured funeral near Guadalajara.

Oseguera, 59, better known as “El Mencho,” died from wounds sustained in a late February firefight with Mexican special forces who had been deployed to capture him. His death marks the end of a years-long manhunt for the country’s most-wanted man, who had a $15 million US reward on his head.

The funeral, held in a CJNG stronghold in Jalisco state, was a display of both opulence and extreme caution. Hundreds of National Guard troops were deployed to prevent outbreaks of the retaliatory violence that shook 20 Mexican states following Oseguera’s death, which saw cartel members burning vehicles and blockading roads.

Mourners, many with their faces concealed by masks, gathered to pay their respects. The somber occasion was punctuated by the sounds of a band playing ranchero music and narcocorridos—ballads that glorify the lives of drug traffickers. According to AFP news agency, five lorries were required to transport the mountain of floral tributes to the cemetery, the majority sent anonymously. Among the elaborate displays was a wreath shaped like a rooster, a nod to the late kingpin’s well-known passion for cockfighting.

Local media reported that as the gold-colored coffin arrived at a chapel within the cemetery grounds, the traditional song El Muchacho Alegre (The Cheerful Boy) was played. Following an hour-long ceremony, the coffin was carried to its final resting place. In a contrast to the extravagant mausoleums that often mark the graves of other drug lords, Mexican media noted that Oseguera’s plot was relatively plain.

Under Oseguera’s leadership, the CJNG evolved from a regional player into one of the world’s most powerful transnational criminal organizations, with tens of thousands of members involved in drug production and trafficking across dozens of Mexican states and beyond.

His killing is being hailed as a significant victory for the administration of President Claudia Sheinbaum, who has faced mounting pressure from US President Donald Trump to intensify efforts against drug trafficking. However, the power vacuum left by El Mencho’s demise has sparked widespread fears of an internal war within the cartel, as rival factions are expected to clash for control, potentially unleashing a new wave of violence across the country.
