Former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Koku Anyidoho, has vehemently dismissed suggestions that his presence at a religious event organized by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) signals a defection.
Mr. Anyidoho has come under scrutiny from political critics following his attendance at the thanksgiving service of Vice President and NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, held on Sunday, February 15, 2026.
In a swift reaction to the speculation, Anyidoho clarified that his participation was strictly in a religious capacity, not a political one. He explained that he attended the service as a representative of the Christian Council of Ghana, an association he values deeply.
“A beautiful blessing to be on the same platform with Rev Professor J.O.Y. Mantey,” Anyidoho stated. “I’m sitting in the midst of Men of God: nothing to do with the will of men. I love my beautiful association with the Christian Council of Ghana. To God be all the glory.”
The outspoken politician, who is the Founder and CEO of the Mills Institute, challenged what he described as “petty political immaturity,” urging the public to stop linking every social interaction to party allegiance. He drew on historical precedent to make his case, reminding critics that cross-party attendance at social events is not new.
Mr. Anyidoho highlighted a recent instance involving the current leadership of his own party to underscore his point.
“This is Johnson Asiedu-Nketiah going to celebrate Kufuor’s birthday in December 2025: has Mosquito become NPP for attending a social event (not Church Service)?” he quizzed, referring to the NDC Chairman’s attendance at a gathering for former President John Agyekum Kufuor.
Drawing from his own political history, he added, “When, as Deputy General Secretary of my NDC, I was mandated to represent my Party at an NPP Political Conference, did that make me an NPP member, or did I sell the whole NDC to NPP?”
He concluded with a direct appeal to his detractors: “Please give Koku Anyidoho a break for attending the Thanksgiving Service of Bawumia. People should grow up from their petty political immaturity.”
The thanksgiving service, held to offer gratitude, saw Dr. Bawumia call for unity, discipline, and hard work among Ghanaians ahead of the upcoming general elections.
