Consumers will pay no less than GH¢17.10 for a litre of diesel from Tuesday, 1 April, after the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) introduced a revised minimum price floor for petroleum products.
The new benchmark, which takes effect in the first pricing window of April, sets the lowest allowable retail price for petrol at GH¢13.30 per litre. Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) will also see a floor of GH¢10.71 per kilogram.
The increases are sharper than the previous pricing window (16–31 March), when the minimum prices for petrol, diesel and LPG stood at GH¢11.57, GH¢14.35 and GH¢10.67 respectively.
In a statement of its revised pricing guidelines, the NPA attributed the adjustments to movements on the international oil market, citing renewed geopolitical tensions in the Middle East that continue to drive volatility in global crude prices.
Under the rules, Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) and LPG Marketing Companies (LPGMCs) are prohibited from selling below the floor. Industry watchers will be watching closely to see whether competition among OMCs – which triggered a fierce price war in late March – will lead to any deviations, though the NPA has warned that non‑compliant players face regulatory sanctions.
