CPP hails Mahama over UN reparations bill passage

The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has extended congratulations to President John Dramani Mahama following the United Nations’ passage of the Reparations Bill, describing the development as a historic achievement for Africa and the black race.

In a statement signed by National Communications Director Osei Kofi Acquah, the party lauded the President’s role in securing UN recognition for reparations related to the Transatlantic Slave Trade and its enduring consequences.

The CPP described the move as “the greatest and most important action taken by an African leader to seek justice for the African in the past, present and future,” adding that it was equally courageous.

According to the party, the achievement resonates deeply with the founding principles of its founder, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, particularly in the areas of Pan-Africanism and social justice.

The CPP noted that the UN’s recognition affirms that crimes committed against black people—from the era of abduction and enslavement through segregation and apartheid to ongoing racial discrimination—remain unacceptable.

“For so long the world has refused to recognise and accept that the abuse of the black skin, whether state-sponsored or by individuals, is unacceptable,” the statement read.

The party further noted that the bill’s passage represents a long-awaited acknowledgment of the injustices suffered by ancestors who were treated as commodities and subjected to forced labour without proper compensation.

“We in the CPP fully associate ourselves and throw our support behind this course which is being championed by the President of Ghana,” the statement added.

The CPP hailed President Mahama for what it described as extraordinary courage in demonstrating that black lives matter, and praised him as “the Black Star who has lightened the way for every black skin to confidently stand against injustice and racism wherever they find themselves in the world.”
