A bold claim by Nigerian skit maker and online streamer Shank Comics has ignited a heated debate about wealth and luxury in the Nigerian entertainment industry.
During a recent livestream session, Shank Comics challenged the public perception that Afrobeats musicians are the wealthiest figures in showbiz. He argued that while music stars often dominate headlines with displays of opulence, it is actually comedians who are laughing all the way to the bank.
According to Shank Comics, top comedic acts like Bovi and Basketmouth possess fortunes that surpass those of leading Afrobeats heavyweights such as Wizkid, Burna Boy, and Asake. He attributes the misconception about who is richer to a fundamental difference in how the two sets of celebrities manage their wealth.
“I think there is more money in comedy than music,” Shank Comics stated during the stream. “Bovi and Basketmouth are far richer [than those musicians], but they prefer to invest instead of buying expensive cars.”
He elaborated that many people assume music stars are wealthier simply because they are more visible with their spending—often flaunting luxury cars, jewelry, and designer clothes. In contrast, he explained, successful comedians tend to keep a lower profile, prioritizing long-term financial security over short-term displays of wealth.
Shank Comics concluded that the financial discipline of comedians allows them to build sustainable empires. He suggested that while musicians may be tempted to spend heavily on a lavish lifestyle, their counterparts in comedy are often quietly investing their earnings and planning for the future.
