Hamad Kalkaba Malboum, President of the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA), paid a courtesy call on the President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), Lawyer Richard Akpokavie, on Tuesday as preparations intensify for the 24th Africa Senior Athletics Championships scheduled for Accra in May.
Accompanied by CAA officials, Malboum expressed strong confidence in Ghana’s ability to deliver an outstanding competition. He highlighted the country’s successful hosting of the 13th African Games last year, noting that the facilities remain in excellent condition for the upcoming continental event.
Ghana will host the Championships from May 12 to 17, 2026, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium in Legon.
Lawyer Akpokavie warmly received the delegation and reiterated his commitment to athletes’ welfare, including facilities and remuneration. “We have to put all hands on deck to organise a memorable and successful world-class event,” he said, expressing optimism that the Ghana Athletics Association would once again deliver.
Bawa Fuseini, President of Ghana Athletics and Deputy Secretary General of the GOC, assured the visitors that Ghana was fully prepared to host a successful championship. He urged participating nations to field their strongest athletes to ensure a highly competitive event.
Lawyer Mohammed Muniru, Secretary General of the GOC, also gave assurances of success, citing the deep passion for track and field among Ghanaians.
Following the courtesy call, Malboum inspected the University of Ghana Sports Stadium. Later, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the CAA and Ghana was signed at the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, formalising the hosting arrangements.
