Breaking new ground: President Mahama announces construction of new runway for Sunyani Airport

In a major boost for regional connectivity and economic development, President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled plans for a significant upgrade to the Sunyani Airport, involving the construction of a brand-new runway capable of handling larger commercial aircraft.

The President made the announcement on Thursday, March 19, 2026, during his “Resetting Ghana Tour” in Sunyani. He outlined the project as a key initiative to enhance air travel to the Bono Region and stimulate local economic growth by creating a modern transportation hub.

The current airport’s infrastructure, specifically its approximately 1.5-kilometer runway, is too short to accommodate jet aircraft, limiting its operational capacity. President Mahama noted that this restriction prevents planes that typically service routes to Kumasi from landing in Sunyani.

While an extension of the existing runway was initially considered, the President explained that nearby infrastructure poses significant challenges to such an expansion. This has led the government to opt for a more ambitious and effective solution: constructing a completely new runway on a different site.

“We have looked at the limitations, and instead of a partial fix, we are committed to a comprehensive upgrade,” President Mahama stated. He revealed that local traditional leaders have already generously provided land for the project. With the site secured, designs are now in place for a modern, 2.4-kilometer runway that will be capable of welcoming larger jet aircraft.

This development promises to significantly improve air connectivity for the Bono Region, facilitating smoother movement for passengers and cargo. It is expected to unlock new opportunities for trade, tourism, and investment in the area.

President Mahama confirmed that the government will formally launch the project with a sod-cutting ceremony at the appropriate time, marking the official commencement of construction work.
