Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has been officially declared the winner of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries held on Saturday, January 31, 2026, securing his place as the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
Dr Bawumia polled 110,643 votes, representing 56.48 per cent of the total valid votes cast. His victory was confirmed by officials of the Electoral Commission (EC) at the party’s headquarters after the completion of collation from all 277 constituencies nationwide.
Declaring the results, an EC official explained that the NPP constitution requires a candidate to obtain more than 50 per cent of the total valid votes to be elected flagbearer.
“Based on the results, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia obtained 56.48 per cent. He has therefore been duly elected the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party for the 2028 elections,” the official stated.
The EC noted that a total of 196,462 votes were cast across the country, with 561 ballots rejected.
According to the final results, former Assin Central Member of Parliament Kennedy Ohene Agyapong placed second with 46,554 votes, representing 23.76 per cent. Former Minister for Food and Agriculture Dr Bryan Acheampong followed with 36,303 votes, accounting for 18.53 per cent.
Former Education Minister Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum secured 1,999 votes, representing 1.02 per cent, while former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyapong polled 402 votes, equivalent to 0.21 per cent.
More than 211,000 delegates participated in the primaries, voting at over 300 polling centres nationwide in what party officials described as a highly competitive internal contest.
The exercise was conducted across all 16 regions of Ghana, with delegates choosing the candidate to lead the NPP’s bid to return to power in the 2028 general elections.
