A newborn baby allegedly stolen from the Mamprobi Polyclinic in Accra has been safely recovered, and a female suspect is in police custody, authorities confirmed on Tuesday.
The swift recovery was the result of a joint effort by the Ghana Police Service, hospital authorities, and community members, triggered by a report filed by the family shortly after the infant went missing.
Following the successful operation, the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, visited the facility and announced plans to implement stronger safeguards to protect mothers and infants in health facilities across the country.
“This morning, the good news is that we have found the baby by the grace of God,” Minister Lartey told the media. She extended the government’s gratitude to all who contributed to the rescue, specifically highlighting the role of a member of the public. “We want to say a big thank you to the whistleblower. We also want to say a big thank you to the police that they’ve been able to work to get the baby reconciled to the mother, or united with the mother today.”
The Minister confirmed that the government’s response would extend beyond the immediate investigation. She stated that social workers would be deployed to hospitals as part of a broader effort to strengthen institutional systems. The aim, she said, is to “minimize or completely get rid of such baby cases or incidents in the hospitals.”
The Member of Parliament for Ablekuma South, Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije, played a key coordinating role between the police, the family, and the hospital. He accompanied officials to the clinic to oversee the safe reunion of the infant with the mother.
Upon the baby’s return, medical personnel at the Mamprobi Polyclinic conducted an immediate examination. Doctors have confirmed that the infant is stable and receiving treatment under close observation as a precautionary measure.
Police investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances of the alleged theft. The identity of the female suspect in custody has not yet been officially released.
