Austria and Ghana set for high-stakes friendly as World Cup preparations intensify

Ghana will face Austria in an international friendly on Friday evening at Vienna’s Ernst Happel Stadium, a fixture that carries significant weight for two nations with ambitions at the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

The match, scheduled for 18:00 local time and set to be broadcast on Ghana Television and TV 3, has drawn considerable interest, with over 40,000 tickets already sold. While the encounter serves as a preparatory step for both sides, the competitive intent remains clear.

Austria head coach Ralf Rangnick has emphasized that his team will treat the match with the seriousness of a competitive fixture. The former RB Leipzig manager views the clash as an ideal opportunity to measure his squad against a formidable non-European opponent.

“Ghana is a technically sound team with physicality, athleticism and dynamism. This is exactly the kind of test we need,” Rangnick said ahead of the game.

Austria arrives in Vienna following a training camp in Marbella, Spain, where Rangnick introduced fresh faces including Paul Wanner and Carney Chukwuemeka. Striker Michael Gregoritsch, whose goal secured Austria’s World Cup qualification, expressed enthusiasm for the challenge.

“Every international match is special. We are well prepared and looking forward to the challenge,” Gregoritsch said.

For Ghana, the fixture offers another opportunity to gauge its strength against European opposition as head coach Otto Addo continues to refine his squad ahead of the World Cup. Addo struck a confident tone when addressing the broader landscape of international football.

“In modern football, anyone can beat anyone. There are no small teams anymore,” Addo said.

Black Stars captain Jordan Ayew underscored the importance of national pride and performance, adding: “We want to do well for our country. Every game is important, and this will be a tough one.”

The two sides have met only once before, playing out a 1-1 draw in Graz in 2007, adding an element of intrigue to Friday’s contest. With both teams combining physicality, tactical structure, and technical quality, the encounter is expected to serve as a valuable benchmark for their World Cup preparations.
