The Member of Parliament for Atwima Mponua, Seth Osei Akoto, has launched the construction of a modern police station in Kotokum, a community grappling with rising armed robbery incidents.
The project, funded from the MP’s Common Fund allocation, aims to bolster law enforcement capacity across approximately 18 communities in the constituency. The sod-cutting ceremony took place at the Kotokum Community Centre, where Osei Akoto reaffirmed a campaign promise made ahead of the 2024 general elections.
The facility will feature a charge office, a Criminal Investigations Department (CID) office, an armoury, separate detention cells for males, females, and juveniles, as well as washrooms, offices, and rest areas for personnel.
Speaking at the event, the MP linked the growing security challenges to increased farming and small-scale mining activities, which have inadvertently attracted criminal elements. He described armed robbery targeting night-time travellers as a major threat to livelihoods and economic progress.
Residents voiced optimism that the new station would deter crime, while also appealing for additional infrastructure. Nana Kofi Agyeman Badu II, the Odikro of Kotokum, commended the MP but urged government intervention in providing potable drinking water, improved telecommunications network, reliable street lighting, and functional electricity transformers.
Osei Akoto directed the contractor to prioritise hiring skilled local labour during construction to create employment opportunities. Nana Agyeman Badu II assured the MP and contractor of the community’s full support for the project.
The police station is widely viewed as a timely intervention expected to enhance security and drive socio-economic growth in the Atwima Mponua District.
