Nigerian Afrobeats sensation Asake has shed light on the personal challenges he faced in his rise to stardom, revealing that his pursuit of a music career initially led to significant conflict with his family.
In a recent interview, the singer, born Ahmed Ololade, detailed the difficulties he encountered as a teenager when his father opposed his decision to become a musician. Asake described his father’s resistance as a formidable obstacle, stating that he was “more stubborn” than himself regarding his career choice.
The tension within the household escalated to a point where, at the age of 15, Asake made the decision to leave home to independently pursue his musical ambitions. “The father who gave birth to me, he’s more stubborn than I am,” he said, reflecting on the strained dynamics of his early years.
Despite the familial discord, the artist was careful to clarify that his respect for his parents remains intact. He noted that he never allowed the conflict to sever his bond with them, a balance he acknowledged is a common struggle for many young creatives navigating family expectations.
Asake’s perseverance has since culminated in a successful career. He has emerged as one of Africa’s most prominent musical exports, known for his fusion of Afrobeats, street pop, and afro-fusion. His 2022 debut album, Mr. Money With The Vibe, achieved historic success, marking one of the largest opening weeks for an African album on Apple Music.
The singer now views his early experiences as formative, teaching him lessons in perseverance and self-belief. He expressed hope that his story will serve as an inspiration to other young artists facing similar challenges in their pursuit of creative careers.
