Arbeloa admits title blow as Real Madrid fall further behind Barcelona

Real Madrid head coach Álvaro Arbeloa has conceded that his side’s La Liga title hopes suffered a significant setback following a costly 2-1 defeat to RCD Mallorca on Saturday.

The loss leaves Madrid second in the table with 69 points, seven points adrift of league leaders FC Barcelona, who currently sit on 76 points. With only eight matches remaining in the campaign, the margin for error has all but disappeared for the defending champions.

Speaking after the final whistle, Arbeloa acknowledged that the timing of the defeat could hardly be worse.

“The situation was much more favorable just hours ago, but the landscape has shifted decisively in Barcelona’s favor,” Arbeloa said. “This is a major hit to our ambitions.”

Despite the grim outlook, the former Madrid captain refused to declare the race over, stressing that a mathematical chance remains. However, he made it clear that his team must now treat every remaining fixture as a must-win, regardless of what Barcelona does.

“We have to stay focused and maintain belief,” Arbeloa added. “The remaining matches are decisive. We must win them all.”

The coach was critical of his team’s performance against Mallorca, pointing to a lack of patience, energy, and creativity—particularly in the second half—that allowed the hosts to secure all three points. He also took personal responsibility for the result and called on his players to respond positively in the coming weeks.

With Barcelona maintaining a firm grip on top spot and Madrid chasing from behind, the title race has intensified as both clubs enter the final stretch of the season.

For Arbeloa and his squad, the message is clear: focus, belief, and perfection are the only paths forward.
