Anthony Joshua injured in Nigeria car crash, with two others dead

Two-time world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has reportedly been involved in a fatal road accident in Nigeria that claimed two lives.

According to Nigeria’s Punch newspaper, the Lexus SUV conveying Joshua collided with a stationary truck on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway at Makun in Ogun State. The report included the vehicle’s registration number and photographs showing Joshua seated in the back of the damaged SUV, surrounded by shattered glass.

The 36-year-old boxer, who is of Nigerian heritage, was said to have sustained minor injuries, while two other occupants reportedly died at the scene. Authorities have launched investigations to determine the cause of the crash.

An eyewitness, Adeniyi Orojo, who participated in rescue efforts, told Punch that the convoy consisted of two vehicles—a Lexus SUV and a Pajero SUV.

“Joshua was seated behind the driver, with another person beside him. There was also a passenger sitting in front, making four occupants in the Lexus,” Orojo said, adding that Joshua’s security team was travelling in the second vehicle.

He noted that bystanders attempted to assist victims before officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps arrived. According to the eyewitness account, two occupants of the Lexus died at the scene.

Joshua is currently in Nigeria on holiday following his victory over Jake Paul in Miami on December 19, where he stopped the former YouTuber in the sixth round at the Kaseya Center.

The London 2012 Olympic gold medallist is expected to return to the ring in February or March, with talks ongoing over a potential summer bout against retired heavyweight Tyson Fury.
