The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has set up temporary pedestrian crossing points at Kaneshie following the closure of footbridges for urgent repair works.
Metropolitan Chief Executive Michael Kpakpo Allotey announced the new arrangements on Thursday during a site visit to oversee the creation of designated crossing routes. The closure, he said, was a necessary safety measure to allow repairs to proceed without risk to the public.
Addressing residents, drivers, and commuters, Mr Allotey appealed for full compliance with the traffic and safety measures, stressing that road discipline was essential to protecting lives.
“Development can only be achieved through collective responsibility and cooperation,” he said, calling on the public to support the Assembly’s efforts.
The Mayor urged drivers to avoid parking along the roadside, noting that such practices worsen congestion and block pedestrian movement. He also appealed to motorists to respect traffic regulations and give way to pedestrians at the newly marked crossing points, warning that failure to do so could prove fatal.
Mr Allotey reaffirmed his commitment to enforcing the law, stating that authorities would take action against recalcitrant drivers. He cited an incident where a driver attempted to drive through despite the presence of traffic officials, adding that the individual would be handed over to the police for appropriate action.
He warned that any attempt to bypass the designated routes or obstruct ongoing works would attract sanctions.
The MCE assured residents that upon completion, the repairs would deliver a safer and more reliable facility. He added that the city’s development agenda required collaboration among all stakeholders, including residents, drivers, and public officials.
As of Thursday evening, the alternative pedestrian routes had been marked out, and traffic officials remained on the ground to guide commuters. No timeline has been given for the completion of the footbridge repairs.
