AMA closes Kaneshie footbridges over structural safety fears

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has ordered the immediate temporary closure of the Kaneshie footbridges following the discovery of serious structural defects, citing urgent public safety concerns.

The directive, issued on Wednesday after an on-site inspection by Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey, requires all occupants on and around the bridges to vacate the area immediately to allow for renovation works.

In a statement posted on Facebook, Mr Allotey warned that the assembly would not compromise on public safety and that anyone who defies the directive or attempts to use the bridges unlawfully would face legal consequences.

Speaking later in an interview, the Metropolitan Chief Executive disclosed that the AMA would use its Internally Generated Funds (IGF) to begin preliminary repairs while awaiting additional financial support from central government. He noted that parts of the structure had significantly deteriorated, with exposed metal reinforcements visible through broken concrete.

The Mayor also called on residents to report unsafe buildings in their communities, promising swift action to ensure compliance with engineering standards.

He further announced plans to collaborate with other Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) across Accra to conduct joint inspections in areas including Adenta, School Junction, Dansoman and Agbogbloshie. The coordinated exercise, led by Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, will target unsafe structures across the capital, with non-compliant developments facing possible demolition.

Frank Nkansah, Municipal Chief Executive for the Ablekuma Central Municipal Assembly, who accompanied the Mayor, attributed the deterioration partly to the persistent occupation of the footbridge by traders, which he said had hindered maintenance over the years.

The Director of the Department of Urban Roads, Engineer James Oduro Amoo-Gottfried, confirmed that the structure is in poor condition and requires urgent attention, supporting the decision to close sections of the bridge. He added that temporary alternative routes, including designated pedestrian crossing points along the median of the Dr Busia Highway, would be created to ensure safe movement while repairs are underway.

The AMA reaffirmed its commitment to improving infrastructure, enforcing regulations and ensuring the safety of residents in the capital.
