Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has been appointed to lead the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Election Observation Mission (EOM) for Benin’s upcoming presidential election, scheduled for April 12, 2026.
According to a statement from his office, Mr. Akufo-Addo will head a multidisciplinary delegation drawn from across ECOWAS member states. The team includes diplomats, electoral experts, representatives of national electoral commissions, members of the ECOWAS Parliament and the Council of the Wise, as well as officials from the ECOWAS Court of Justice.
The former president is expected to arrive in Cotonou, Benin’s capital, on Wednesday, April 8, 2026. He will return to Accra on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, following the conclusion of the mission.
The ECOWAS observation team aims to ensure a transparent and credible electoral process, reinforcing democratic governance in the region.
