Africa must pursue its own interests as global order collapses – Sam Jonah

Ghanaian statesman and business leader Sir Sam Jonah has called on African countries to end economic deference and decisively advance their own interests in response to a rapidly disintegrating global order.

Speaking as keynote speaker at the Africa Trade Summit 2026, Sir Sam warned that the once predictable, rules-based international system has effectively broken down, leaving Africa highly vulnerable if it fails to act with urgency and resolve.

He noted that economic power is increasingly being used as a weapon through tariffs, supply chain controls, and trade restrictions, often with Africa bearing the consequences despite playing a minimal role in global instability.

“This is the moment for Africa to be selfish — unapologetically and boldly selfish — in pursuing our interests,” he said.

Sir Sam urged African leaders to focus on local value addition, equitable trade arrangements, and stronger continental cooperation rather than seeking external validation. He clarified that such “selfishness” should translate into job creation, industrial expansion, and wealth retention within the continent, instead of the continued export of raw materials.
