The Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, has said the successful refurbishment of the pitch at the Accra Sports Stadium is just the first step in a comprehensive, nationwide reset of Ghana’s sports infrastructure. He has also reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to maintaining the newly upgraded turf to the highest standards.
Speaking after the completion of the pitch works, Mr. Ampofo Ankrah expressed his gratitude to the media and the general public for their constructive criticism throughout the project. He emphasized that such feedback is vital to the NSA’s mission of responsible stewardship over state assets.
“It won’t just be the Accra Sports Stadium. A lot of you have said it’s a one-stadium project. It isn’t. The reset is not an event, it’s not a ceremony—it’s a process. It has started, and it’s ongoing,” the Director-General stated.
Mr. Ampofo Ankrah outlined a broader vision that includes the renovation and upgrade of key sporting venues across the country. He listed the planned projects, which include the Aliu Mahama Stadium in the Northern Region, the Cape Coast Stadium in the Central Region, the Essipong (or ‘Hull’) Sports Stadium in the Western Region, the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in the Ashanti Region, and a stadium in the Volta Region.
“The work will continue across the board to ensure that the reset is guided by the principles of accountability and probity,” he added.
The Director-General also pledged the NSA’s dedication to the pitch’s long-term care, a promise that follows the enforcement of strict pitch protection measures during the 2025 festive season. These measures, which included a ban on activities on the natural grass without protective covers, have been successful. The Accra Sports Stadium’s turf is now widely regarded as the best-maintained playing surface in Ghana.
Mr. Ampofo Ankrah further praised his deputies, Veronica Commey and Gideon Hammond, as well as the entire NSA management, operations, and facilities maintenance teams for their teamwork in navigating the challenges of the project. He concluded by reaffirming the NSA’s commitment to working for the Ghanaian people, with the full backing of the President.
