Accra Sports Stadium turf defies doubters, remains Ghana’s best five months on

Five months after the National Sports Authority (NSA) enforced a strict pitch protection policy during the busy Christmas season, the Accra Sports Stadium turf stands as the finest playing surface in the country—proving that the December directive was no “nine-day wonder.”

Last year, amid one of the busiest holiday event calendars on record, the NSA leadership took a firm decision: no activity would be allowed on the green grass without pitch protectors. The move, widely seen as decisive, brought sanity and respect back to the authority’s management of the facility.

However, doubts lingered over the consistency and sustainability of the Green Grass Technology (aGGT) maintenance schedule—an approach known to be capital intensive, requiring round-the-clock inputs to maintain a healthy pitch.

Fast forward five months, and the Accra Sports Stadium pitch has silenced the sceptics. It is now widely regarded as the best-kept sports surface in Ghana. The endorsement comes from no less a figure than Didi Dramani, head coach of Premier League giants Accra Hearts of Oak.

The positive assessment will come as welcome news for the NSA administration, which continues to struggle to manage the country’s major sports venues through internally generated funds (IGF). There is currently no dedicated state funding specifically allocated for infrastructure and pitch maintenance.

Observers say the NSA deserves encouragement and support to replicate this success across all 16 regions of Ghana. In this instance, the authority has clearly demonstrated that protecting the Accra Sports Stadium pitch was neither a fleeting policy nor a short-lived publicity stunt.

The sad reality, however, remains: until more dedicated funding is directed toward this critical area of sports management, the Accra Stadium turf will continue to offer the country’s best option for top-level football matches—a standard that remains fragile without sustained financial backing.
