The Accra Basketball League (ABL), in partnership with the Ghana Basketball Association (GABBA), has taken a significant step toward the upcoming season by hosting a pre-technical competition meeting in Accra.
The strategic gathering took place on Monday, April 6, 2026, at the Midindi Hotel in Accra, drawing key stakeholders to deliberate on essential technical and operational frameworks for the league.
Discussions centered on several critical areas, including team registrations, the competition format, and official rules of play. Additionally, stakeholders addressed the formation of a League Club Association and a Players Club Association, signaling a move toward more structured governance within the league.
Speaking at the event, ABL Chairman Eric Opoku Antwi reaffirmed the league’s dedication to fostering fair competition and raising the profile of basketball across Ghana.
“We want to showcase basketball at its best and attract corporate sponsors to grow the game,” Antwi stated.
As part of efforts to elevate both the standard of play and event presentation, the league plans to designate the Borteman facility as a primary venue for matches this season.
GABBA President Alex Kukula praised the strong turnout at the meeting, calling it an encouraging indicator for the sport’s future in the country.
“This is a great sign of cooperation and willingness to grow the game,” Kukula noted.
He further described the ABL as one of the largest basketball leagues on the African continent, adding that with appropriate support, the league has the potential to achieve even greater heights.
Beyond local competition, the league is expected to serve as a vital platform for talent identification and development, helping to prepare players for Ghana’s national teams and future international basketball competitions.
