Barcelona abandon pursuit of Marcus Rashford as financial dispute derails transfer

Barcelona have officially ended their interest in Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford after the two clubs failed to agree on a transfer fee, sources have confirmed.

The Catalan giants informed United they would only pay £13 million for the England international—half of the £26 million valuation the Premier League side had set. With no compromise reached, Rashford has returned to Manchester, and Barça have walked away from the negotiating table.

However, the Spanish club have left the door ajar for a potential loan move later in the window. According to sources close to the negotiations, Barcelona would reconsider their position if United signal a willingness to sanction another temporary departure for the 27-year-old.

Rashford, who has fallen out of favour under Erik ten Hag and now Ruben Amorim’s evolving system, was seen as an opportunistic target for Barça, who remain constrained by La Liga’s financial fair play regulations. The club’s well-documented wage bill issues continue to limit their ability to register new signings without first offloading players.

United, for their part, are under no immediate pressure to sell. Rashford still has two-and-a-half years remaining on his current contract, and club sources insist they will not be forced into accepting cut-price offers for a player who has scored over 130 goals for the first team.

The collapse of talks leaves Rashford in limbo as the January transfer window enters its final weeks. While Barcelona have not entirely closed the door, any revived interest would depend entirely on United lowering their demands and agreeing to another loan—a prospect that currently appears unlikely.

For now, Rashford is expected to rejoin first-team training at Carrington, though his long-term future at Old Trafford remains far from certain.
