As part of his ongoing State Visit to Belarus, the President of Ghana, H. E. John Dramani Mahama, traveled to the western city of Brest to explore opportunities for agricultural cooperation and food security between Ghana and Belarus.
Upon arrival, President Mahama was received by the Governor of Brest, Piotr Parkhomchik, alongside senior Belarusian regional officials. The two leaders held preliminary talks focused on strengthening bilateral ties, with agriculture identified as a key pillar for shared growth.
The President later toured a major agro-industrial facility in the Brest region, where he observed advanced production processes, including large-scale mechanized farming, cold-chain logistics, and high-efficiency agro-processing lines. Belarusian specialists briefed the Ghanaian delegation on their use of modern irrigation systems, fertilizer application techniques, and livestock management technologies โ innovations that could help Ghana reduce post-harvest losses and boost year-round food production.
During the visit, President Mahama formally invited Belarusian investors to partner with Ghanaian businesses, emphasizing the mutual benefits of closer economic cooperation. “Knowledge sharing in agriculture and agro-processing is essential for achieving food security in Ghana,” he said. “Belarus has world-class expertise, and Ghana has vast arable land and a growing market. Together, we can build a resilient agricultural value chain.”
Governor Parkhomchik expressed support for the initiative, noting that Brest’s agribusiness sector is eager to explore joint ventures and technology transfer agreements with Ghanaian counterparts. Discussions also touched on possible student exchanges and technical training programs to build local capacity.
The Brest leg of the State Visit builds on a broader Ghana-Belarus cooperation framework, with both sides signaling intent to sign preliminary memoranda of understanding in the coming months. President Mahama was accompanied by a delegation of Ghanaian business leaders and agricultural advisors, underscoring the private-sector driven nature of the proposed partnerships.
The President is expected to continue his engagements in Minsk before returning to Ghana to brief stakeholders on the outcomes of the visit.
