NSA boss backs Andre Ayew for Black Stars World Cup squad

The Director-General of Ghana’s National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, has thrown his support behind Black Stars captain Andre Ayew, insisting that the veteran forward still deserves a place in Ghana’s squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup.
Speaking ahead of the submission of Ghana’s final World Cup squad to FIFA, Mr. Ampofo Ankrah expressed confidence in Ayew’s abilities and experience, stressing that the former captain remains qualified to represent the nation on football’s biggest stage.
“The final Black Stars World Cup squad list will be submitted to FIFA in less than 48 hours. I still believe that Andre Ayew is qualified to be in the team,” the NSA Director-General stated.
His comments are likely to reignite debate among Ghanaian football fans and pundits over the inclusion of the experienced attacker, whose role in the national team has generated mixed opinions in recent years.
Ayew, one of the most decorated players in Ghana’s football history, has been a central figure for the Black Stars for more than a decade. The son of Ghana football legend Abedi Pele, Andre Ayew has represented the country at multiple Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and World Cups, earning widespread recognition for his leadership, commitment and ability to deliver in crucial matches.
Supporters of his inclusion argue that his vast international experience, leadership qualities and winning mentality could prove invaluable in a tournament environment where younger players may be facing the pressure of a World Cup for the first time. They believe Ayew’s presence in the dressing room could help maintain team cohesion and provide guidance to emerging talents.
Critics, however, contend that the Black Stars should focus on building for the future by giving opportunities to younger and more in-form players. Some have questioned whether the veteran forward still possesses the pace and physical attributes required to compete at the highest level of international football.
The debate comes as anticipation builds across the country ahead of the announcement of Ghana’s final squad. Head coach Carlos Queiroz and the technical team are expected to make difficult decisions as they seek to assemble a balanced squad capable of making a strong impact at the tournament.
Ayew’s record with the Black Stars remains impressive. Over the years, he has established himself as one of Ghana’s most capped players and has scored crucial goals in major international competitions. His performances at previous World Cups have cemented his place among the country’s most accomplished footballers.
With the deadline for squad submissions fast approaching, all eyes will be on the Black Stars technical team to see whether Ayew’s experience and pedigree will earn him a place on the final roster.
As discussions continue among football stakeholders and supporters, Mr. Ampofo Ankrah’s endorsement adds another influential voice to the ongoing national conversation about the composition of Ghana’s World Cup squad and the role experienced players should play in the country’s quest for success on the global stage.
