President John Dramani Mahama has arrived in London for a high-profile working visit aimed at strengthening economic cooperation between Ghana and the United Kingdom, attracting foreign investment, and engaging the Ghanaian diaspora community.
The visit, which is expected to feature a series of high-level engagements with British political, business, and diplomatic leaders, underscores Ghana’s renewed efforts to deepen bilateral ties with one of its longest-standing international partners while positioning itself as a leading destination for global investment.
Upon his arrival in the British capital, President Mahama was warmly received by Lord Katz MBE of the Royal Household and His Excellency Gordon Wetherell, Special Representative of the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), reflecting the significance attached to the visit by the British government.
According to a statement issued by the Presidency Communications Office and signed by Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the visit will focus on expanding economic partnerships, promoting trade and investment opportunities, and strengthening people-to-people relations between the two countries.
Royal Audience and Prime Ministerial Meeting
A major highlight of the visit will be a royal audience with King Charles III, an engagement that is expected to reinforce the longstanding friendship and cooperation between Ghana and the British monarchy.
President Mahama is also scheduled to hold a breakfast meeting with British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer. The discussions are expected to cover a broad range of issues including trade, investment, education, climate cooperation, security, and opportunities for enhanced economic collaboration between Ghana and the United Kingdom.
Observers believe the meeting presents an important opportunity for both nations to explore new avenues of partnership at a time when African economies are seeking increased foreign direct investment and stronger economic integration with global markets.
Engagement with the Ghanaian Diaspora
Recognising the significant contribution of Ghanaians living abroad to national development, President Mahama’s itinerary includes a diaspora town hall meeting organised by the Ghana High Commission in London.
The event will provide a platform for members of the Ghanaian community in the United Kingdom to engage directly with the President on national development issues, economic opportunities, and government policies.
The Ghanaian diaspora remains one of the country’s largest sources of foreign exchange through remittances, with successive governments acknowledging the critical role overseas citizens play in supporting economic growth and investment.
Ghana-UK Investment Summit
Central to the President’s visit is the Ghana-UK Investment Summit, which will be officially opened by President Mahama at Raffles London.
The summit is expected to bring together leading Ghanaian entrepreneurs, international investors, policymakers, and business executives to explore investment opportunities across key sectors of the Ghanaian economy.
Government officials say the summit is designed to showcase Ghana’s economic potential, attract foreign direct investment, and facilitate partnerships between Ghanaian businesses and British investors. Particular attention is expected to be given to sectors such as infrastructure, energy, technology, manufacturing, agribusiness, and financial services.
The forum is also expected to highlight Ghana’s ongoing economic reforms and efforts to create a more investor-friendly business environment.
Showcasing Ghana on the Global Financial Stage
In another significant engagement, President Mahama will participate in activities at the London Stock Exchange, where he is expected to ring the ceremonial bell marking the official start of trading.
The event is intended to showcase Ghana’s growing presence in international financial markets and reinforce confidence among global investors regarding the country’s economic prospects.
Economic analysts view the engagement as a symbolic yet important step in promoting Ghana as a competitive destination for international capital and long-term investment.
Address at Chatham House and Africa Debate
The President will further use the visit to project Ghana’s vision for economic transformation and regional leadership through an address at Chatham House, one of the world’s leading policy institutes.
He is also scheduled to deliver a keynote speech at the 12th Africa Debate at the historic Guildhall in London, where African and international leaders, policymakers, academics, and business executives will discuss the continent’s development prospects and emerging opportunities.
The address is expected to focus on Ghana’s economic recovery agenda, investment opportunities, governance, and Africa’s role in the evolving global economy.
Strengthening a Historic Partnership
The United Kingdom remains one of Ghana’s most important development and trade partners, with cooperation spanning education, healthcare, governance, security, and investment.
Officials say President Mahama’s visit represents a strategic effort to deepen this relationship while positioning Ghana as a preferred destination for investment and innovation in West Africa.
The President is expected to conclude his London visit on June 3, 2026, after completing the series of diplomatic, economic, and diaspora engagements aimed at advancing Ghana’s national development objectives and strengthening its international partnerships.
