Hearts of Oak coaching rift: How tensions between coach Didi Dramani and club board led to his exit

Fresh details have emerged regarding the circumstances that reportedly led to the departure of former Hearts of Oak head coach Mas-Ud Didi Dramani, with revelations pointing to a breakdown in relations between the experienced tactician and the club’s leadership rather than purely on-field results.
According to information shared by Kessben Sports, the seeds of the fallout were planted in December last year when the Hearts of Oak Board summoned members of the technical team to explain the club’s growing number of drawn matches in the Ghana Premier League.
At the time, Hearts of Oak had struggled to convert promising performances into victories, with several stalemates costing the club valuable points in the title race. The board, led by Chairman Togbe Afede XIV, reportedly sought answers from the technical bench concerning the team’s inconsistent performances and inability to secure crucial wins.
Sources indicate that the explanations offered by the technical team during the meeting failed to satisfy some members of the board, particularly Togbe Afede. It is alleged that remarks made during the discussions were interpreted as questioning the chairman’s football knowledge and technical understanding of the game.
The comments reportedly strained relations between the two parties, creating an atmosphere of mistrust and tension within the club’s hierarchy. Following the meeting, communication between the board and the technical team is said to have deteriorated significantly, with routine interactions becoming increasingly limited.
Reports further suggest that the disconnect extended beyond boardroom meetings, affecting the flow of training reports and regular updates that are typically shared between the technical department and club management. Such developments fueled speculation that a major decision regarding the future of the coaching staff could be imminent.
Although Coach Didi later learned of the chairman’s dissatisfaction and reportedly offered an apology in an attempt to mend relations, insiders claim the gesture came too late to reverse the damage that had already been done.
Financial considerations are also believed to have played a role in the club’s eventual decision. Information available indicates that the technical team’s monthly wage bill stood at approximately GH¢120,000, with Coach Didi reportedly earning around GH¢70,000 per month. Given the financial challenges facing many Ghanaian football clubs, the board is believed to have weighed the cost of maintaining the technical setup against the team’s performances and overall objectives.
Didi Dramani, one of Ghana’s most respected football coaches, boasts an impressive coaching résumé. He previously guided Ghana’s Black Satellites and has worked with leading clubs including Asante Kotoko. He also served within the technical structure of the Black Stars and has earned recognition for his expertise in youth development and tactical organization.
His appointment at Hearts of Oak was initially viewed as a significant statement of intent by the club as it sought to restore its status as a dominant force in Ghanaian football. However, despite moments of promise, the relationship between the coach and management appears to have deteriorated beyond repair.
Neither Hearts of Oak nor Didi Dramani has publicly provided a detailed account of the circumstances surrounding the separation. Nonetheless, the latest revelations suggest that interpersonal disagreements and governance issues may have been just as influential as football results in shaping the outcome.
The development highlights the delicate balance that often exists between technical teams and club administrators, where differences in vision, communication challenges, and expectations can sometimes prove decisive in determining a coach’s future.
As Hearts of Oak prepares for the next chapter in its rebuilding process, supporters will be hoping that stability returns to the club both on and off the pitch, allowing the Phobians to focus on reclaiming their place among the elite teams in Ghanaian football.
