The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has taken a major step toward securing the nation’s football future by hosting its first-ever talent identification programme in the United Kingdom, featuring 40 players of Ghanaian descent born in the UK and currently registered with Category One academies.
The exercise, which targeted players in the U15 to U20 age brackets, drew participants from elite clubs including Chelsea FC, Everton FC, Manchester City FC, and Arsenal FC. The session took place in Bromley and was supported by the GFA in partnership with Coach Hene Sports Club, the Ghana High Commission in the UK, and Prince Lamona Consult.
The initiative is designed to identify and engage top young talents of Ghanaian heritage, with a view to strengthening Ghana’s national teams for the long term.
A team of experienced evaluators led by GFA Technical Director Professor Mintah and FIFA Talent Coach Stuart McLaren oversaw the assessment. They were joined by coaches from Coach Hene Sporting Club, who closely monitored standout performers throughout the session.
Speaking on the success of the programme, the GFA indicated that plans are already underway to expand the initiative. In the coming months, the Association will extend the talent search to include Category Two and Three academies, as well as grassroots football across the UK and beyond.
The move reflects the GFA’s growing commitment to tapping into the vast pool of Ghanaian-heritage talent in the diaspora, ensuring a steady pipeline of skilled players for the Black Stars and junior national teams.
