NSA confirms committee of inquiry into fatal incident at Accra Basketball League game

The Ghana Basketball Federation (GBBF) has officially acknowledged the constitution of a Committee of Inquiry by the National Sports Authority (NSA)to investigate the events surrounding the death of player Michael Arhin during an Accra Basketball League fixture on Wednesday, May 20, 2026.

Arhin, a player for Coldstore Basketball Club, passed away following what the Federation described as an “unfortunate incident” during the game. The GBBF reiterated its deepest condolences to his family, his teammates at Coldstore, the Greater Accra Basketball Association (GABBA), and the wider basketball community.

The Committee of Inquiry, initially established by GABBA, will now include direct representation from both the Ghana Basketball Federation and the National Sports Authority (NSA). Their presence is intended to provide oversight and technical support throughout the review process.

According to an official statement from the Federation, the Committee has been tasked with examining several key areas:

· The specific circumstances leading up to the incident.
· The emergency response measures taken immediately afterward.
· Compliance with existing operational and player welfare protocols.
· Any safety or administrative gaps that may have contributed.

The Committee is expected to issue recommendations upon completing its work.

The GBBF assured the public that the matter is being treated with the “utmost seriousness,” emphasizing that player welfare, safety, and the integrity of the sport remain the top priorities.

The Federation respectfully appealed to fans and the general public to refrain from speculation and allow the inquiry process to proceed without interference.

“May the soul of Michael Arhin rest in perfect peace,” the statement concluded.
