Spanish regulator fines Gerard Pique’ €200,000 for insider trading over COVID-era acquisition deal

Spain’s National Securities Market Commission (CNMV) has fined former Barcelona and Manchester United defender Gerard Piqué €200,000 ($217,000) after finding him guilty of insider trading related to a corporate acquisition during the height of the pandemic.

The penalty, announced following an investigation by the market watchdog, stems from a series of share purchases made by the retired footballer in January 2021—just days before a confidential merger was made public.

The Trade

According to the CNMV’s ruling, on January 20, 2021, Piqué acquired 104,166 shares in Aspy Global Services, a Spanish firm specializing in workplace health and safety systems. At the time, Aspy was a relatively obscure player in the occupational health sector.

The regulator’s investigation established that Piqué acted on non-public information provided by a businessman who informed him that Atrys Health, a listed medical diagnostics and telemedicine company, was in advanced negotiations to acquire Aspy.

Atrys Health’s interest in Aspy was particularly timely: the pandemic had dramatically increased demand for workplace COVID-19 testing and occupational health monitoring, making Aspy a strategically valuable target for expansion.

Profit and Sale

The CNMV found that Piqué did not hold the shares for long. Once the acquisition talks were formally announced and Aspy’s share price reacted, the World Cup winner sold his entire position. By the time he exited the trade, Aspy’s per-share value had climbed by more than 20%, netting him a significant—albeit undisclosed—profit.

Spanish market rules strictly prohibit trading on material, non-public information, regardless of whether the trader is a financial professional or a public figure.

Response

Piqué, who retired from professional football in 2022 and is best known for his glittering career with Barcelona’s first team and Spain’s 2010 World Cup-winning squad, has not publicly commented on the fine. His representatives have not yet indicated whether he will appeal the CNMV’s decision.

The €200,000 penalty, while substantial for an individual, is relatively modest compared to the multi-million-euro fines the CNMV can impose on corporations. Regulators noted, however, that the sanction serves as a warning that insider trading rules apply to all investors—including high-profile athletes with access to private deal flow.

Broader Context

Atrys Health eventually completed its acquisition of Aspy Global Services. The deal was part of Atrys’ rapid expansion during the pandemic, as the company sought to integrate workplace safety and diagnostic services across Spain and Latin America.

Piqué, who has built a business empire since retiring—including the revamped Davis Cup tennis competition via his Kosmos investment vehicle—now faces a formal stain on his off-field record. The CNMV’s ruling does not carry criminal charges but is considered a serious administrative penalty.
