Elon Musk has launched a fresh attack on Christopher Nolan, claiming the director “lost his integrity” by casting Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy in the upcoming epic The Odyssey.
The controversy erupted after Nolan confirmed in a Time magazine profile that Nyong’o would portray both the legendary Spartan queen and her sister, Clytemnestra . Almost immediately, the casting choice drew sharp criticism from conservative commentators and a torrent of posts on social media, with Musk acting as the loudest voice.
In a series of posts on X, the platform he owns, Musk endorsed claims that Nolan is a “coward” who cast Nyong’o specifically to qualify for Academy Awards under diversity and inclusion standards .
“He wants the awards,” Musk wrote on X, responding to a user who accused Hollywood of “race swapping” historical characters . In previous posts, he agreed with a commenter who called Nolan “racist against the Greek people and their cultural heritage” .
Criticism of Nyong’o’s Appearance
The criticism extended beyond casting logistics to target Nyong’o’s physical appearance. Musk reposted comments from conservative pundit Matt Walsh, who wrote: “Not one person on the planet actually thinks that Lupita Nyong’o is ‘the most beautiful woman in the world.’” Musk responded to that post with a one-word reply: “True” .
Walsh and others have argued that Homer’s description of Helen as having a “fair-skinned” complexion and “golden hair” necessitates a white actress, specifically a blonde .
The Homeric Debate
Scholars and historians note that the argument for “historical accuracy” is complicated by the fact that Helen is a mythological figure, not a historical one.
Homer’s Iliad famously does not give a detailed description of the woman whose beauty “launched a thousand ships.” The poet uses epithets like “white-armed” (λευκώλενος) and “lovely-haired,” which were formulaic phrases used to denote status and grace rather than specific skin tones .
Furthermore, historians specializing in the ancient Mediterranean argue that Homer’s description of “xanthē” (ξανθή) — often translated as “golden” or “blonde” — could refer to a spectrum of shades from light brown to red or blonde. Genetic and archaeological evidence suggests that the inhabitants of Bronze Age Greece primarily had olive skin, dark hair, and brown eyes, making a “Mediterranean” appearance (similar to modern Greeks or Turks) more plausible for a Spartan queen than a Northern European one .
“The blonde look was associated with connections to the gods, since light-haired individuals were less common in the ancient Mediterranean,” explains historian Bettany Hughes, noting that the color was symbolic rather than literal .
Defenders and the ‘View’ Backlash
Despite the online firestorm, Nyong’o has found powerful defenders in Hollywood. Whoopi Goldberg pushed back against the criticisms during an episode of The View, arguing that Nyong’o’s talent and widely acknowledged beauty make her an ideal choice for the role .
Nyong’o, a Kenyan-Mexican actress who won an Academy Award for 12 Years a Slave and starred in Black Panther, has not yet publicly responded to the controversy.
The debate highlights the modern tensions surrounding mythology and media representation. While The Odyssey is rooted in ancient Greek oral tradition, it remains a story interpreted through a modern lens.
Nolan addressed some of his bold choices in the Time interview, including casting rapper Travis Scott as a bard, which he justified by comparing ancient oral poetry to modern rap . He has yet to respond directly to Musk’s criticisms.
The Odyssey is scheduled for release in North America on July 17, 2026 .
