Islamist group tightens grip on Mali’s capital with escalated blockade

An Islamist militant group has tightened its blockade around Mali’s capital, severing key access routes and choking the flow of essential goods into the city in a bid to weaken government control, officials and transport operators said Wednesday.

The intensified restrictions target major roads leading into Bamako, creating mounting delays and uncertainty for traders and freight carriers. While exit from the capital remains possible in some cases, entry has become increasingly difficult, raising fears of imminent shortages of fuel, food, and other vital supplies.

“We are seeing a deliberate strategy to strangle the capital and demonstrate the group’s ability to disrupt daily life,” a Malian security source told Thepressradio.com, speaking on condition of anonymity. Authorities have sought to reassure the public that measures are being taken, but no timeline for reopening the routes has been provided.

The blockade follows a wave of militant attacks across the country, underscoring persistent security challenges that have plagued Mali for years. Observers warn that a prolonged siege could accelerate economic pressure, worsen living conditions, and further destabilize the capital.

Business owners and residents already report mounting strain on supply chains, with some basic goods growing scarcer. “We don’t know how long we can hold out if nothing gets in,” said a Bamako-based trader who requested anonymity for safety reasons.

The group’s tightening of the noose around Bamako is seen as part of a broader campaign to expand its influence beyond rural strongholds and directly challenge the state’s authority. Analysts caution that without swift intervention, the blockade could trigger a humanitarian and economic crisis in one of West Africa’s most vulnerable capitals.
