Ghanaian actor and politician John Dumelo has shared a deeply personal account of how an unexpected pregnancy led him to marriage, fatherhood, and an unconventional career as a farmer—all while ignoring public criticism about his choice of partner.
In a recent candid reflection, Dumelo revealed that he had not planned to marry his wife, but life took a different turn when she became pregnant during their dating period.
“The moment I found out, I told her, ‘We’re going to see your people, pay your bride price, and I’ll take you home,’” Dumelo recounted.
The announcement drew whispers from onlookers, who questioned why the actor—known for his charm and on-screen presence—would settle down with a “local girl” when he could have married a fellow celebrity.
“People talked, saying I left beautiful actresses to marry a local girl, but I wasn’t moved by what they said. I knew what I wanted,” he stated.
But the pregnancy triggered an even more profound transformation. Dumelo said that as he walked through his community, he saw children who were hungry and struggling—an image that struck him at his core.
“I told myself, ‘I’m keeping this child, and I’ll grow food for these children too,’” he explained.
That resolve marked the beginning of his journey into agriculture. What might have seemed an unlikely pivot for a Nollywood and Ghallywood star became, for Dumelo, a deliberate act of celebration and service.
“That’s how I became a farmer. It was my way of celebrating my child and giving back to the people around me,” he said.
Dumelo, who has since balanced his creative career with political aspirations and agribusiness, continues to champion farming as a dignified and impactful vocation—rooted not in ambition alone, but in the everyday realities of fatherhood and community.
