Breweniase barrier in Ghana’s Oti Region have intercepted a large consignment of ammunition, arresting two suspects in the process.
The seizure occurred during a routine checkpoint operation along the Eastern Corridor highway on April 29, 2026. Officers stopped a cargo vehicle for inspection and discovered a significant quantity of ammunition concealed inside the truck.
Preliminary reports indicate the consignment contained more than 20,000 rounds of ammunition, raising serious alarm over the intended use and destination of the shipment.
The driver and his assistant were taken into custody immediately and are assisting with investigations. Authorities are working to trace the source of the ammunition and identify any wider network involved in the illegal transport.
Security agencies have also launched inquiries into how the large consignment reportedly passed through several other checkpoints before being intercepted at Nkwanta–Breweniase.
Officials say the operation is part of intensified efforts to curb the illegal movement of arms and ammunition across the country, especially along major transport corridors. They stressed that such seizures are critical to preventing weapons from reaching criminal elements or fueling regional insecurity.
The ammunition has been secured as evidence. Police have assured the public that all persons linked to the illegal shipment will be identified and prosecuted.
Further updates are expected as investigations continue.
