UCC Lecturer, teaching assistant killed in truck crash on Cape Coast Highway

The University of Cape Coast is mourning the loss of a senior lecturer and his teaching assistant who died in a road accident on Tuesday when a tipper truck reportedly crushed their vehicle on the Cape Coast–Accra highway.

Dr Kwabena Koforobour Agyemang of the Department of Geography and Regional Planning and Mr Peter Amoadu-Asmah, a recent graduate serving as his teaching assistant, were killed at Third Ridge, according to a statement issued by the university.

Describing the deaths as a “profound shock and deep sorrow,” UCC management said Dr Agyemang was a dedicated academic and respected member of the university community who made significant contributions to teaching, research and service.

Mr Amoadu-Asmah, who was undertaking national service, had distinguished himself as the overall best graduating student of the department.

Dr Agyemang had served as Senior Lecturer in the department since February 2022. He earned his PhD in Geography and Regional Planning from UCC in 2019 and previously worked at the Environmental Protection Agency, the Atwima District Assembly and the Ghana Education Service. He was the immediate past Senior Hall Tutor of Casely Hayford Hall.

Mr Amoadu-Asmah completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Geography and Regional Planning at UCC in December 2025 and had interned with the Mfantsiman Municipal Assembly before becoming a teaching assistant in November 2025.

The university extended condolences to the bereaved families and appealed to the public, particularly the media, to exercise restraint and sensitivity in reporting the incident.
