Cleveland Hospital, Korle Bu Teaching Hospital forge strategic partnership to boost specialist healthcare in Ghana

A delegation from Cleveland Hospital has met with the leadership of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital to explore a strategic partnership aimed at strengthening specialist healthcare delivery and expanding capacity building for medical professionals in Ghana.

The meeting, which took place at Ghana’s premier referral facility, focused on developing a structured collaboration framework that includes exchange programmes and fellowship opportunities. These initiatives are designed to expose local clinicians to global best practices in advanced medical care.

According to both institutions, the partnership is expected to significantly enhance the skills and competencies of Korle Bu medical staff through structured training, knowledge sharing, and hands-on exposure to innovative procedures and technologies.

Key Officials in Attendance

Representing Korle Bu Teaching Hospital were Dr. Harry Akoto, Deputy Director of Medical Affairs; Ms. Getrude Kinney, Deputy Director of Administration and Executive Assistant; and Mr. Mustapha Salifu, Head of Public Relations. Mr. Kumi Asante, CEO of Adanduff Construction, also participated as a stakeholder in healthcare infrastructure development.

The Cleveland Hospital delegation included Ms. Evgeniya Shevchenko, International Relations Manager; Ms. Abigail Stapleton, Chief Commercial Officer; and Dr. Tosin Goje, Medical Director of the Centre for Infant and Maternal Health.

Commitment to Excellence

Dr. Yakubu Seidu Adam, CEO of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, reaffirmed the institution’s dedication to excellence in healthcare delivery, training, and research. He noted that such partnerships are critical to advancing specialist medical services in Ghana and improving patient outcomes.

Dr. Adam added that the collaboration would create opportunities for consultation and joint management of complex medical cases requiring highly specialised expertise, thereby improving access to advanced care for patients.

Focus on Cardiac Care and Organ Transplantation

The Cleveland Hospital team highlighted their institution’s strong expertise in cardiac care, particularly heart surgeries, and expressed readiness to support Korle Bu in strengthening capacity in that specialty.

In response, Dr. Adam outlined advanced medical services already being performed at Korle Bu, including organ transplantation and cataract surgeries. He also disclosed ongoing efforts to support legislative processes aimed at strengthening Ghana’s legal framework for organ transplantation.

Both institutions acknowledged the importance of adapting to emerging trends in modern medicine, such as minimally invasive procedures, specialised surgeries, and medical innovation. Cleveland Hospital reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Korle Bu in embracing these advancements.

The delegation indicated that a detailed roadmap would be developed to guide the partnership, with continued engagements expected to formalise the collaboration and define clear areas of technical cooperation.
