Ibrahim Mahama, CEO of Engineers and Planners, has expressed gratitude to former President Nana Akufo-Addo for his role in facilitating the successful transition of the Damang Mine concession in Ghana’s Western Region.
The company has formally assumed operational control of the asset following the exit of Gold Fields Ghana, which managed the mine for several years. The structured transition involved government institutions and key stakeholders in the mining sector.
Speaking during the official takeover ceremony, Mahama noted that Akufo-Addo’s support helped ease discussions and contributed to the smooth completion of the deal. He underscored the importance of government involvement in major economic and industrial transitions, particularly in strategic sectors such as mining.
A Shift Toward Local Participation
The takeover represents a significant milestone for Engineers and Planners, a company long known for providing mining support services in Ghana. The move signals a shift toward greater local participation in mine ownership and direct operations within the country’s extractive industry.
Industry observers view the agreement as part of broader national efforts to increase Ghanaian ownership in the mining sector, ensuring local companies play a more active role in managing natural resources. Such transitions are closely monitored due to their potential impact on employment, production, and regional development.
Focus on Stability and Growth
During the event, emphasis was placed on continuity of operations and maintaining stability at the mine as new management takes over. Stakeholders expressed optimism that the transition would support both economic growth and community development in surrounding areas.
Mahama indicated that Engineers and Planners intends to focus on long-term value creation, including reinvestment in infrastructure and local development initiatives.
As the Damang Mine enters this new phase, attention now turns to how the company will manage operations and contribute to the growth of Ghana’s mining sector in the coming years.
