The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has issued a travel advisory urging Ghanaian nationals travelling to European countries to brace for the full implementation of the Schengen Area’s Entry/Exit System (EES), which goes live on April 10, 2026.
The new automated system will replace the traditional manual passport stamping with a digital data collection process at all external borders of the 29 European nations that comprise the Schengen Zone. According to a statement from the Ministry on April 9, the system was initially rolled out on October 12, 2025, and has since been gradually introduced at border crossings across the region.
The EES is an advanced IT platform designed to enhance border management by recording the entry and exit details of non-EU nationals. Travellers will be required to provide personal data, biometric information including facial images and fingerprints, travel documents, and a record of their entries, exits, or any refusal of entry for short-stay purposes.
The Ministry noted that while the core procedures are uniform, implementation may vary slightly between Member States to accommodate national operational and technical requirements, in line with Regulation (EU) 2025/1534.
Exemptions and Compliance
The advisory clarified that certain categories of travellers are exempt from registration under Article 2(3) of Regulation (EU) 2017/2226. These include:
· Non-EU nationals with residence cards linked to EU citizens.
· Individuals travelling for intra-corporate transfers, research, studies, training, voluntary service, pupil exchanges, educational projects, or au-pairing.
· Holders of long-stay visas and residence permits.
· Heads of state, accredited diplomats, certain armed forces personnel, cross-border workers, and railway crew members on international journeys (under specific conditions).
The Ministry has therefore advised all Ghanaian nationals planning to travel to the EU or Schengen Area to familiarise themselves with the new requirements to avoid complications or delays at border checkpoints.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Ghana remains committed to advancing the interest of Ghanaians and counts on the cooperation of travellers to the EU/Schengen area,” the statement concluded.
