An Accra High Court has dismissed a GHC50 million divorce settlement claim brought by Joana Quaye, the ex-wife of Ghanaian business magnate Richard Nii Armah Quaye (RNAQ).
Justice Kofi Dorgu, a Court of Appeal judge presiding over the case, awarded Mrs. Quaye only GHC300,000 in the distribution of matrimonial properties.
The judge stated that the reduced award was intended to discourage divorces motivated by the prospect of substantial financial gain.
Mrs. Quaye, who is a co-founder, shareholder, and director of Quick Credit Microfinance Company Limited (now known as Bills), had initially demanded GHC50 million as part of the divorce settlement.
Beyond the GHC300,000, the court granted Mrs. Quaye one-third of the couple’s matrimonial property located at Dansoman, as well as two vehicles.
Mr. Quaye was also ordered by the court to take responsibility for the educational and health needs of their children.
In remarks that accompanied the ruling, Justice Dorgu told Mrs. Quaye she remained free to remarks on the court.
