A formal petition has been lodged challenging the electoral process of the African National Congress (ANC) Ghana branch, citing alleged constitutional violations and procedural irregularities with cross-border implications involving Ghanaian and Nigerian party members.
The petition, filed by a faction within the branch, questions the credibility and fairness of the recent internal elections. According to sources, the complainants argue that key actions taken during the electoral process did not comply with the ANC’s constitution or its internal party guidelines.
Specifically, the petition raises concerns over the participation and treatment of members of Ghanaian and Nigerian backgrounds, alleging that certain individuals were disenfranchised or unfairly favoured based on nationality. This has introduced a unique cross-border dimension to the dispute, highlighting tensions within the diaspora branch of South Africa’s ruling party.
The complainants contend that these alleged irregularities undermine transparency and could erode confidence in the leadership selection process. They are calling for an immediate review of the elections and a full investigation by ANC national leadership to ensure compliance with the party’s founding principles of non-discrimination and internal democracy.
“This is not just about Ghana. It involves our Nigerian comrades too,” a source close to the petitioners said. “The process must be fair to every member regardless of their country of origin within this branch.”
The development adds to ongoing debates about internal democracy within political organisations across the continent, where diaspora branches often grapple with unique governance challenges.
Observers note that the outcome of the petition could have significant implications for the ANC’s cohesion in Ghana and its relationship with other West African nationalities within the branch, including Nigerians. All eyes are now on how the ANC leadership in both Ghana and South Africa will respond to the allegations.
No official response has yet been issued by the current ANC Ghana branch executive. Efforts to reach party spokespersons were unsuccessful as of press time.
