Prez Mahama: LGBTQ+ issues not Ghana’s top priority amid focus on basic needs

President John Dramani Mahama has urged calm and constructive dialogue on LGBTQ+ matters, emphasising that the sensitive topic, while important, does not rank as the nation’s most pressing concern compared to delivering essential services and economic opportunities.
Speaking at a Presidential Dialogue with Civil Society Organisations held at Jubilee House on Monday, March 30, President Mahama described the ongoing national debate as emotionally charged—even in countries with established liberal traditions—and called for restraint and mutual respect rooted in Ghana’s values.
“It is not the most important issue we face as a nation,” the President stated, referencing his recent engagement with the World Affairs Council. “We are still grappling with the provision of basic needs: education, health care, jobs, food, clothing, and shelter.”
He reassured stakeholders that his administration remains focused on addressing socio-economic challenges, including improving access to quality education and healthcare, as well as creating employment opportunities for Ghanaians.
President Mahama acknowledged the diverse and strongly held views across Ghanaian society regarding the private member’s bill currently before Parliament on LGBTQ+ issues. He stressed that any resolution must follow democratic processes, uphold the Constitution, respect human rights, and align with the country’s core values and the rule of law.
“While there are strong and differing views within our society, we believe that issues must be addressed through democratic processes, our core values, dialogue, and the rule of law,” he said.
The President also addressed international reactions to Ghana’s handling of the matter, including actions by some foreign institutions. He underscored the need for continued engagement and mutual respect, while insisting that national decisions should be situated within Ghana’s constitutional and cultural context.
“These developments underscore the importance of continued engagement and mutual respect,” he added. “Ghana will continue to uphold its democratic values while engaging constructively with the international community.”
The remarks come against a backdrop of heightened public discourse on LGBTQ+ rights, involving civil society groups, religious leaders, and policymakers who hold divergent positions on the proposed legislation.
President Mahama’s comments signal a government approach that seeks to balance democratic debate with national priorities centred on development and the welfare of citizens.
