Black Stars suffer fourth straight defeat as late Germany goal secures 2-1 win in Stuttgart

Ghana’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup hit another low on Monday night as the Black Stars conceded a late winner to lose 2-1 to Germany in an international friendly at the Mercedes-Benz Arena.

Substitute Deniz Undav struck in the 88th minute to condemn Otto Addo’s side to a fourth consecutive defeat, following previous losses to Austria, South Korea and Japan.

The result extends a worrying run of form for Ghana, who have now conceded ten goals across those four matches while struggling for consistency at the other end.

Havertz Penalty Breaks Deadlock

Germany dominated large spells of the first half and were unfortunate not to take an earlier lead. Florian Wirtz rattled the post, while Jonathan Tah and Nick Woltemade both missed presentable chances. A Wirtz effort was also ruled out for offside.

The breakthrough finally arrived just before the interval. Jonas Adjetey was penalised for handball inside the area, and Kai Havertz stepped up to calmly convert from the spot, sending the hosts into the break with a 1-0 advantage.

Fatawu Restores Parity

Ghana struggled to create meaningful openings in the opening period but showed greater resolve after the restart. The Black Stars grew into the contest as Germany failed to capitalise on their first-half dominance.

The visitors’ persistence paid off in the 70th minute. Derrick Kohn delivered a low cross into the box, and Abdul Fatawu was on hand to finish from close range, pulling Ghana level against the run of play.

Undav Strikes Late to Settle Contest

The equaliser briefly lifted Ghana, but the team’s inability to maintain pressure proved costly. Germany regained control in the closing stages and found the decisive goal two minutes from time.

Leroy Sané provided a headed assist inside the box, and Undav reacted quickest to turn the ball home from close range, handing the hosts a hard-fought victory.

Mounting Pressure Ahead of World Cup

With the global tournament on the horizon, the Black Stars face growing questions over their defensive resilience, consistency and readiness. The four-match losing streak has amplified scrutiny on head coach Otto Addo, with supporters demanding an urgent turnaround.

Ghana must now regroup quickly to arrest the slide and rebuild confidence before their World Cup campaign begins.
