NPP must secure decisive parliamentary majority in 2028- Afenyo- Markin

Afenyo-MaThe Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has called on members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to work towards securing a decisive parliamentary majority in the 2028 general election.

Speaking to members of the Tertiary Students’ Confederacy (TESCON) of the NPP in Parliament on Wednesday, Mr Afenyo-Markin said the party’s goal should be to achieve a commanding majority in the next Parliament to support the presidential bid of its flag bearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

“In 2028, we do not need a mighty few but we need a mighty huge majority for Dr Bawumia in Parliament,” he stated.

Despite the party’s current minority status, the Minority Leader expressed optimism about its prospects, drawing a parallel to the party’s victory in 2016.

“The feeling I had in 2015 is the same that I am feeling today; in 2015, I had this feeling that no matter what, we would win the 2016 elections, and we did,” he said.

Mr Afenyo-Markin described Dr Bawumia as a “man with solutions” who had been “tried and tested,” contrasting the NPP’s situation with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), which he said has no candidate for the 2028 election.

He urged TESCON members to begin preparations early, noting that the party’s internal elections would be completed by September, paving the way for a focused campaign.

The Minority Leader also took the opportunity to criticise the current administration over a recent recruitment exercise, which he said saw hundreds of thousands of applicants compete for a small number of vacancies. He encouraged the students to remain committed to the NPP, assuring them that their loyalty would be remembered when the party returns to power.

In response, the President of TESCON at the Christian Service University, Nana Boakye, commended the Minority leadership for engaging the youth. He appealed to the party to provide greater recognition and support for TESCON members who face challenges while working for the party, describing such support as the “greatest motivation we need.”
