Black Stars handed tough World Cup 2026 group as Gyan backs Ghana to advance

Ghana’s Black Stars have been placed in a highly competitive Group D at the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup draw held on Wednesday, setting up heavyweights clashes against England and Croatia, with Panama completing the group.

The draw, which took place in Miami, was witnessed on stage by Ghana legend and all-time top scorer Asamoah Gyan, who served as a special guest at the ceremony. His immediate reaction reflected both respect for the challenge ahead and confidence in Ghana’s chances.

Drawn alongside the Three Lions of England and 2022 World Cup bronze medallists Croatia, the former Black Stars captain could not hide his excitement. Gyan, Africa’s highest goal scorer in World Cup history with six goals, appeared eager for the long-awaited showdown with England, a tie that has fuelled great anticipation among fans of both nations.

While acknowledging the difficulty of the group, Gyan expressed optimism, noting that the revised 48-team format allows the top two teams in each group, as well as the best third-placed teams, to progress to the Round of 32.

“It’s a tricky group. All four teams are targeting qualification, but we are optimistic back home. Everyone wants Ghana to qualify, and we will do our best to reach the next stage,” Gyan said.

England, currently ranked among the world’s top five teams, pose a significant test, with their only senior meeting with Ghana ending in a 1–1 friendly draw in 2011. Croatia, renowned for their tactical discipline and experience, have been consistent performers in recent tournaments, reaching the final in 2018 and the semi-finals in 2022. Panama, though seen as the underdogs, bring a physical and fearless CONCACAF style that could prove decisive.

The 2026 tournament will mark Ghana’s fifth World Cup appearance, following campaigns in 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2022, with the quarter-final run in South Africa remaining the nation’s best finish.

Attention now turns to preparation, as the Black Stars target a strong group-stage showing and aim to better their historic 2010 performance on football’s biggest stage.
