DVLA to begin nationwide enforcement on expired DV plates March 24

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), in partnership with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, will commence a nationwide enforcement exercise on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, targeting vehicles still displaying 2025 DV plates and expired DP stickers.

In a public notice issued over the weekend, the DVLA explained that the use of 2025 plates and expired stickers is now illegal. The Authority had previously granted an extension for their use due to challenges encountered during the initial rollout of new vehicle licence plates.

However, following the official issuance of 2026 DV plates to motor traders, fleet owners, and licensed trade plate dealers on February 4, 2026, the DVLA stated that the grace period has ended.

The Authority reminded the public that the use of DV plates is regulated by the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 (L.I. 2180). Regulation 23 outlines the specific categories of vehicles permitted to use such plates. Vehicle owners whose cars do not fall within these specified categories are required to complete the appropriate registration processes in line with the law.

All DVLA operational offices began registering vehicles for the 2026 year from January 2, 2026. The Authority is urging motorists still using the expired 2025 DV plates or expired DP stickers to regularise their documentation promptly to avoid facing sanctions during the enforcement exercise.
