The Ghanaian government has successfully evacuated all citizens who requested assistance to return home from Israel, as regional tensions continue to mount following the outbreak of the 2026 Iran War.
Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced the completion of the evacuation operation through an official statement on Wednesday, confirming that all Ghanaians who sought the government’s help to leave Israel have been safely returned to Ghana.
The evacuation encompassed both private citizens and diplomatic personnel from Ghana’s Embassy in Tel Aviv, though the ministry has retained a minimal number of essential staff to maintain critical consular services for any Ghanaians who remain in the country.
Minister Ablakwa extended his appreciation to the governments of Israel and Egypt for their vital cooperation throughout the operation, noting that their assistance was instrumental in ensuring the safe passage of Ghanaian nationals.
“The government remains unwavering in its commitment to prioritising the safety and welfare of all Ghanaians, both at home and abroad,” Ablakwa stated, while welcoming the returnees upon their arrival in Ghana.
The evacuation comes against the backdrop of the 2026 Iran War, which erupted on February 28 and has now entered its third week. The large-scale military confrontation involving the United States and Israel against Iran has resulted in significant casualties, triggered global economic disruptions, and created an increasingly volatile regional security environment.
According to the Foreign Minister, the administration of President John Dramani Mahama will continue to closely monitor the situation and stands ready to undertake additional evacuation efforts should the need arise to protect Ghanaian citizens abroad.
The successful operation demonstrates Ghana’s preparedness to respond to emergencies affecting its diaspora community during times of international crisis.
