Ghana, Kyrgyztan establish diplomatic ties and sign visa waiver agreement

In a historic move to strengthen South-South cooperation, Ghana has signed a visa waiver agreement with the Central Asian nation of Kyrgyzstan, marking the first official diplomatic engagement between the two countries.

The agreement, which currently applies to holders of diplomatic and service passports, was formalized during an official visit to Kyrgyzstan by Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. The visit is particularly notable as it makes Mr. Ablakwa the first African Foreign Minister to be hosted in the country.

During his stay, the Ghanaian minister held high-level talks with Kyrgyzstan’s President, Sadyr Japarov, and Foreign Minister, Jeenbek Kulubayev.

“The visa waiver agreement is expected to be further escalated to ordinary passport holders in the near future,” Mr. Ablakwa stated on social media, confirming the establishment of relations. “To demonstrate our resolve and trust as friendly nations, we signed a visa waiver agreement for holders of diplomatic and service passports in the interim.”

Beyond travel facilitation, the two nations also signed a second agreement to establish formal political consultations, paving the way for ongoing dialogue. A key focus of the discussions was the potential for economic partnership, leveraging the strengths of both nations as major gold producers.

“Ghana, as the leading gold producer in Africa, and Kyrgyzstan, being a leading gold producer in Central Asia with its famous Kumtor Gold Mines, have committed to a mutually beneficial partnership in the interest of our two economies,” Mr. Ablakwa explained.

The move is seen as a strategic effort by Ghana to diversify its international partnerships and explore new markets. Kyrgyzstan has recorded one of the world’s best Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth rates over the last three years, presenting a dynamic opportunity for trade and investment.

Mr. Ablakwa expressed optimism about the new relationship, particularly as Kyrgyzstan was recently granted observer status within the African Union.
