In a move that signals an intensifying battle for market share, GOIL has once again reduced prices at its pumps, undercutting recent adjustments by competitor Star Oil.
Effective 2 p.m. today, March 17, 2026, GOIL has lowered the price of petrol to GH¢12.28 per litre, down from the GH¢12.40 announced earlier. Diesel has seen a more significant drop, now selling for GH¢14.98 per litre, a reduction from GH¢15.69.
In a social media announcement, Ghana’s second-largest oil marketing company (OMC) framed the decision as a response to broader economic concerns, stating that the move was influenced by President John Mahama’s commitment to easing the burden on Ghanaians amid the ongoing Middle East conflict.
“GOIL is pleased to announce a reduction in our ex-pump prices,” the company posted, adding that “this reflects our commitment to delivering value to customers, while remaining competitive in the market.”
A Rapid Response to Market Moves
The latest adjustment by GOIL comes on the heels of a series of price cuts by market leader Star Oil. Earlier today, Star Oil announced it was reducing petrol to GH¢12.29 per litre from GH¢12.49, and diesel to GH¢14.99 from GH¢15.99. This marks the third price revision by Star Oil since March 15.
Industry observers were quick to characterize GOIL’s move as a direct reaction to Star Oil’s aggressive pricing strategy.
“Some players describe this as a price war, a clear intensification of competition between the two top firms,” a source in the industry told Joy Business.
Room for Further Cuts?
Despite the rapid-fire reductions, market analysts suggest there may still be room for prices to fall further. The price floor established for the current two-week pricing window indicates that petrol has not been sold below GH¢11.57 per litre, while diesel has a floor of GH¢4.35.
These figures suggest that both companies are operating with a margin that could allow for additional reductions in the coming days.
Beyond the pump prices, industry watchers anticipate that the rivalry may soon extend to other service offerings as both GOIL and Star Oil look to attract and retain customers in an increasingly competitive landscape.
