Ghana to acquire new presidential aircraft by November

The Ghanaian government has announced plans to acquire additional aircraft for the presidential fleet by November this year, including one specifically dedicated to the President’s travel, as part of broader efforts to strengthen the country’s state aviation capacity.

Callistus Mahama, Executive Secretary to President John Mahama, disclosed the development in response to recent public discussions surrounding presidential travel arrangements. He explained that the move is aimed at ensuring the President can rely fully on government-owned aircraft for official trips, both domestically and internationally.

According to him, the planned acquisition forms part of ongoing efforts by the current administration to rebuild key state institutions and operational systems inherited upon assuming office.

The announcement follows public debate over the temporary use of an aircraft belonging to a relative of President John Dramani Mahama for official presidential travel—a situation that raised questions regarding potential perceptions of conflict of interest.

Acknowledging the public discourse, Callistus Mahama stated that the concerns raised by citizens were legitimate in a democratic society where citizens have the right to question decisions taken by those in authority.

However, he emphasised that presidential travel involves complex considerations, including security, logistics, cost, and operational efficiency. He pointed out that Ghana’s current state aircraft have certain technical and operational limitations, particularly when it comes to long-range diplomatic missions and tightly scheduled international engagements.

“These constraints have occasionally required temporary arrangements to ensure that the Head of State can perform official duties effectively while travelling,” he explained.

Despite these challenges, Callistus Mahama stressed that strengthening the presidential air transport system remains a priority, noting that the planned addition of new aircraft will help eliminate the need for such interim solutions in the future.

“Once the new aircraft are integrated into the presidential fleet, Ghana will regain the capacity to depend fully on its own state assets for the safe and efficient transportation of the Head of State during both domestic and international assignments,” he added.

The planned expansion of the fleet is expected to form part of wider efforts to improve the operational readiness and logistical capacity of the Ghana Armed Forces. Officials believe the move will also address growing public expectations for transparency and efficiency in the management of state resources.

Callistus Mahama further noted that while public scrutiny remains essential in a democratic system, the current discussions also highlight the broader challenge of rebuilding and strengthening national institutions to meet modern governance demands.

The acquisition timeline targets November 2026 for the integration of the new aircraft into the presidential fleet.
