The Inspector General of Police has ordered the immediate deployment of a specialised intelligence-led security team to the troubled town of Gbeniyiri in the Savannah Region following violent reprisal attacks between members of the Brifo and Fulani communities.
A joint team of Intelligence Officers and Investigators has been dispatched to reinforce the existing regional command, according to a statement issued from the Regional Police Headquarters in Damongo on Thursday. The move signals growing concern over the escalating cycle of violence in the remote community.
The Savannah Regional Command assured the public that the situation is firmly under control, confirming that calm has been restored to the township even as the newly arrived crack team combs the area for suspects.
“The team comprising Intelligence Officers and Investigators are providing support to the Regional Command to intensify security and to bring perpetrators to justice,” the statement signed by ASP Richard Osei Yaw, Staff Officer for the Savannah Region, read.
The rapid intervention aims to intensify security operations and ensure the swift apprehension of those responsible for the recent unrest.
Residents in the volatile catchment area around Gbeniyiri have been urged to go about their lawful duties without fear, as police visibility is expected to increase significantly in the coming days.
The police have not yet confirmed if any arrests have been made or if there were casualties in the clashes, stating only that efforts to apprehend those behind the attacks are “ongoing.”
